| TIPS FOR IT JOBS TODAY: MAKING YOUR MARK FOR A SUCCESSFUL IT CAREER |
Relying on your technological expertise alone is a strategy of the past. Whether you’re a consultant or on staff, making an impression that’s greater than just your technological expertise will be extremely important in the future. Here are some tips:
- Be aware of the business. It’s easy to be tunnel-focused on the functions of IT. Today’s CEOs want IT professionals who can connect IT to the business strategy. To do this requires becoming knowledgeable about your company’s business, the industry and the best way for IT to make an impact.
- Talk the talk. After becoming knowledgeable about your company’s business strategy and the environment in which your company is operating, make sure you can talk about IT and its role in a way that everyone across the business can understand. Being able to communicate effectively across the business is the best way to showcase the importance and impact that IT is making across the organization.
- Have results handy. Be prepared to share with others the results of the IT function. Be armed with stats on things like ROI and how an IT strategy has affected a function of the business. Market the value of IT and the positive outcomes you’ve caused.
- Stay abreast of changes in technology. It seems obvious, but the IT profession changes daily. If IT professionals are going to make their mark, they need to take time to keep up to date on changes and enhancements in their specialty. Earning certifications and taking classes also goes a long way in proving an IT professional’s commitment to gaining the knowledge necessary to be a solid contributor to a company’s strategic plan.
- Know your customers. Whether it’s the internal operations team or your external clients, it’s important for IT to be familiar with the needs and requirements of all its customers. Avoid working in isolation – be visible, ask questions and work to meet both internal and external needs.
